In 1899, George and Marianne Smith founded Noquochoke Orchards in Westport when they purchased the farm from whaling captain William Ball. He was "Master of Theo Chase," a whale boat out of Westport Point in 1847. Ball built the house that still stands today.
The second generation took over with George and Marianne's son, Alexander. Five generations of the Smith Family have tended this land including four George's: the founder, the current owner, his son, and his grandson.
Doris Mills is treasurer and actively takes part in direct marketing in the area of Farmers' Markets seven days a week. George E. Smith is President & C.E.O., and manages all areas responsible for producing a great fruit crop. Susan Smith is manager of the marketing operations for the Farm Stand.
Today, Noquochoke Orchards produces apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums, strawberries, blueberries, vegetables, Macomber turnips and sweet pressed cider. These are sold at the farm stand as well as at farmers' markets.
Some of the antique trees planted by William Ball still grow on the farm.
