Our mother was a tough business woman. Her motto was no matter what keep on going and do not give up. She managed this operation and raised five children. We all worked very hard. We had some tough times and some good times. We survived two hurricanes. We lost the entire fruit crop in a matter of hours. We remember the entire fruit crop was on the ground and damaged along with several uprooted trees. In each of these hurricanes it took up to approximately five years to recover from our loss. We never gave up but moved on.
We have moved ahead with the times. We have eliminated using ladders and replaced them with hydraulic lifts. Additionally, we have built a new packaging shed, cold storage and cider operation. We installed the new flash processing ultra violet technique which is approved by the FDA for safe cider.
We've built a new Farm Stand and have expanded our direct marketing operations, including embracing technology with our web site (www.noqorchards.com) and email accessibility (info@noqorchards.com). We built a new State-of-the-Art Insecticide Shed which has a storage shed and attached mixing pad which will contain all items if a spill occurs.
Our mother worked with Doris at the Farmers' Markets in the Boston, Newton, Brookline and City Hall Plaza venues for 15 years. The orchards were passed on when Edale C. Smith, George and Doris's mother, passed in 2000 at an impressive 91 years of age. She was a remarkable woman.
